Three days is enough to see Marrakech’s essentials without rushing: one day in the Medina, one exploring gardens and the modern city, and one venturing beyond it. Here’s how to structure it.

Our Pick

Base yourself in the Medina for easy access to Day 1 and 2, and book your Day 3 excursion at least 24 hours ahead — popular desert and mountain tours fill up fast in high season.

Day 1: Medina & Jemaa el-Fna

Morning: Start at Bahia Palace before the tour groups arrive, then walk to Ben Youssef Madrasa and the nearby Saadian Tombs. Grab a coffee in a Medina café between stops.

Afternoon: Head into the souks north of Jemaa el-Fna. Follow no fixed route — leather, textiles, lanterns and spices are loosely zoned by street. Budget at least two hours if you plan to shop.

Evening: Be in Jemaa el-Fna as the sun sets, when the food stalls and performers set up. Try a rooftop restaurant overlooking the square for dinner, then walk the square itself once it’s fully dark.

Full list of stops: see our Things to Do guide.

Day 2: Gardens, Palaces & Gueliz

Morning: Visit Majorelle Garden early, ideally at opening time, before it gets crowded and hot. Book a timed ticket in advance if travelling in high season. Combine with the adjacent YSL Museum.

Afternoon: Walk (or taxi) into Gueliz for lunch at one of its French-influenced bistros, then browse the concept stores and galleries along Rue de la Liberté.

Evening: Book a hammam or a Moroccan cooking class back near the Medina — a good way to end an active day, and one of the more memorable things to do in Marrakech.

Day 3: Desert or Mountain Day Trip

Morning: Depart early for either the Agafay Desert (closer, roughly 45 minutes) or the Atlas Mountains and Ourika Valley (roughly an hour). Both are typically sold as full- or half-day tours with pickup included.

Afternoon: Agafay tours usually include lunch and optional camel riding or quad biking; Atlas Mountains tours often stop at a Berber village and, depending on the route, waterfalls.

Evening: If you chose Agafay, consider staying for a sunset dinner in the desert before heading back. Otherwise, return to the Medina in time for a final rooftop dinner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3 days enough for Marrakech?

Yes, for a first visit. It covers the Medina, the main gardens and palaces, and one day trip. If you want to add Essaouira or a second day trip, plan for 5 days instead.

Should I do the desert trip on Day 1 or Day 3?

Day 3 works best for most travellers, since it lets you settle in and get oriented in the Medina first. If you’re jet-lagged, a lower-key Day 1 in the city is easier than an early desert pickup.
