Weather & best time to visit
March–May and September–November are the most comfortable windows — warm days, cooler evenings. Summer (June–August) is very hot, often exceeding 38°C. Winter (December–February) is mild by day and cold at night, especially in the desert.
Currency
The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is a closed currency — you generally can’t buy it before arriving and can’t take large amounts out. Withdraw cash from ATMs on arrival (airport ATMs are reliable) and carry small notes for the souks, taxis and tips, since change can be scarce for large bills.
Getting around
The Medina is walkable but easy to get lost in — download an offline map. Between the Medina and Gueliz/Hivernage, use petit taxis (agree the fare or insist on the meter) or ride-hailing where available. For day trips, book a driver or organised tour rather than self-driving into the mountains unless you’re experienced with the roads.
Safety
Marrakech is generally safe for tourists, including solo travellers, with normal city precautions: watch belongings in crowded areas like Jemaa el-Fna and the souks, agree taxi fares upfront, and politely decline unofficial “guides” who approach you unsolicited.
SIM & eSIM
An eSIM activated before you land is the easiest way to have data from the moment you arrive, especially useful for maps and translation apps in the Medina. Physical local SIM cards are also available at the airport and in Gueliz if your phone doesn’t support eSIM.
